Frequently Asked Questions
What can I expect when I visit?
Massage Therapy treatments can differ in length, focus and approach. Each visit will include: intake to determine the plan for the session, assessment and treatment, as well as guidance on self-care to enhance the benefits of therapy between visits. For those new to Mend Well Therapeutics, plan a little extra time so we can review your full health history and provide you with all you will need to know about the care you’ll receive.
Is there parking?
Yes! For clients visiting Purcell's Cove, there is free driveway parking, directly next to Purcell's Cove Road. The area fits two vehicles so park to one side. If you'd prefer, you can park on the roadside or a few houses past us at the community mailboxes. Make your way to the lower level via stairs at the side of the parking area.
I don't see your address, where are you located?
Address and contact information can be found in the confirmation and reminder emails sent with your booking.
The studio in Purcell's Cove is located in our family home. In an effort to ensure personal privacy and reduce spam calls and emails, contact information is only offered when a booking has been created. Thank you for your understanding.
What should I wear?
There are no specific requirements regarding attire. You may wish to arrive in comfortable clothing to accommodate any initial assessment. Many traditional massage techniques are intended to be hands-on, and the removal of clothing will allow for Swedish, Myofascial, and Deep Tissue work in the areas of concern. Your comfort is paramount - we work on one area at a time, keeping all others covered and cozy. Because Massage Therapy is highly adaptable, there are also many techniques that can be applied over clothing, should you wish to remain dressed.
Will my treatment cause me pain?
Pain is never the goal of Massage Therapy Treatment. Communication is key, and your comfort is always top of mind.
Restorative massage is an excellent choice for those wishing to avoid any intense pressure during the treatment. A deep tissue approach will include specific work to tolerance, and some discomfort is common when challenging tissue restrictions. We will work together to find the right fit for you.
Are there side effects of Massage Therapy?
Any bodywork or physical therapy can affect a number of body systems. The effects can last hours or days following treatment, and they depend on a client's state of health and our chosen approach. To avoid possible negative effects of mild nausea, headache, muscle stiffness, or 'kickback' pain afterward be sure to drink plenty of fluids to help with cellular detoxification. Gentle movement, heat/cold, or an epsom salt bath as directed can also promote a positive post-treatment response. It is also advised to avoid nicotine, caffeine and alcohol prior to/following a massage.
Do you direct bill insurance companies?
We currently bill to Medavie Blue Cross and Canada Life. For all other plans, a receipt can be provided for reimbursement. Extended health plans vary, so please review your own plan’s requirements before your visit (ie.you may require a physician referral or have a co-pay amount due at the time of treatment). If you have questions about billing to other companies, please reach out.
Can I work out after my massage?
Generally speaking, daily exercise should be enjoyed before a massage. Some techniques promote tissue release, which can alter body mechanics for a period of time. The restorative benefits of a treatment can continue for many hours so we recommend gentle, comfortable movement afterward (instead of heavy or repetitive exercise) to maximize these benefits. If you are looking for sports massage ahead of training or competition, the treatment can be adapted to suit this goal.
How often should I book my treatments?
Depending on the goals for treatment, frequency can vary widely from person to person. Response to a massage treatment can also vary, based on a client's general state of health, tolerance to techniques and inclusion of other care. An injury can require treatment on a semi-weekly basis, while a preventive approach may be achieved a few times per year. Those with a chronic condition or predictable triggers in their daily lives will find massage helpful every month or two.
Is it okay to combine other therapies when receiving massage therapy?
Absolutely! Each practitioner in your circle of care can offer guidance on how to proceed, so you receive the best outcomes from integrated treatment. It is true that there are times when a singular approach may be ideal, and we can address this on a case by case basis.
How accessible is your practice/studio?
We believe that massage therapy can benefit anybody and all bodies. It's always our goal to make those who come through the door feel welcome, included, seen, and heard, whenever and however they show up.
In terms of physical accessibility, please note that the studio in Purcell's Cove is reached via stairs and sloped path. The location on Cunard Street (serving Friday sessions) is accessed by stairs.
I didn't receive my reminder email. How do I confirm my appointment?
There are rare occasions when emails are not issued from the booking platform due to system maintenance. There are also times when an appointment does not 'capture' or complete (likely due to lost or weak connection while using the online booking tool). Not to worry... you can login to your online profile to view your history and upcoming appointments, or reach out directly to confirm. Just head to the contact page and use the form provided. Following your first booking, you will be provided with mobile and email contacts.
